Apple unveils 3G iPhone

As expected, Apple unveiled the long awaited 3G version of the iPhone. Dubbed iPhone 2.0, it will come with Microsoft's push mail technology, a longer battery life and integration with an application store. The iPhone 2.0 software for the iPhone 3G will be available as a free upgrade for the older model, though iPod touch owners will need to pay a fee of $9.95 for it.

Perhaps the move that surprised observers the most was the substantially lowered prices. The 8GB version of iPhone 3G will sell for just $199, with the 16GB flavor going for $299. The new iPhones are expected to arrive in the United States, as well as in 24 other countries, on July 11.

For more on the new iPhone:
- check out this the Washington Post blog

10 reasons not to support the iPhone

It's not enough that people flaunt their incredibly cool iPhones on their own time--a growing number want to use them for corporate communications, as well. If you've been looking for a reason that the senior of VP for sales can't bring his iPhone up on the internal network, CIO's Al Sacco has you covered 10 ways. The solid reasons for putting the iPhone on hold include no native support for push email and calendar sync, no Apple-approved third-party apps, no physical keyboard, and no replacement batteries. If those reasons won't quiet the demands of those who can't stand the thought of being without their sleek Apple iPhone for even a few hours a day, you can always roll out the big guns, like reason number 10: No one has yet demonstrated that the iPhone is a great corporate device. That should put an end to the argument. Right?

For the rest of the 10 reasons to keep the iPhone out:
- Read the complete list at ITWorld

In some ways, Google's wireless developments remind us of a certain advertising rabbit--they just keep going and going. Google is moving in a number of new directions, with its upcoming 700 Mhz spectrum bid, the Android application platform, and now, a special interface solely for the Apple iPhone. With its search portal running in native mode on the still-hot phone, Google is moving more strongly to play a dominant role in mobile search.

AFP hack allows root access to iPhone

Did you allow your users to bring iPhones into your organization? Don't say we didn't warn you. An iPhone hacker going by the name of "Core," has uncovered a previously unknown AppleTalk Filing Protocol vulnerability that allows for full read/write access to an iPhone or iPod Touch's memory. This is bad news for enterprise iPhones: such a hack could easily allow access to the contents of a stolen iPhone, including confidential emails and documents. Hopefully, Apple will see fit to patch this exploit in its next firmware release for the iPhone. Until then, make sure that your users keep their devices extra secure.

For more on the hack:
- see this article from TUAW

Apple opens iPhone

The path to success, so far, has been relatively smooth for the Apple iPhone. One notable rough spot, though, has been the question of third-party applications: Apple's point of view was that they should use the web, or hit the road. A particularly harsh byproduct of this point of view is the phenomenon of the "iBrick", the iPhone left useless by the latest software revision. Now, Apple is changing direction and offering an SDK for developers to use in building new applications for the sleek high-style phone. It's too early to say that this will keep all iPhone users happy, but it's likely to be seen as a step in the right direction by loyal iPhone users who simply want more apps for their favorite phone.

For more on the new SDK:
- read the full story at DailyTechRag

Hackers revive iPhones

You've got to hand it to Apple: their iPhone has certainly had an impact on the market. Of course, at least one part of that impact Apple probably could have done without. Customers have been truly steamed about the number of iPhones turned into non-functional (yet still sleek) bricks with the latest software update. Now, a group of hackers says that it has developed a method for un-bricking the iPhones. Their software, they say, will restore the phones to full functionality while maintaining the unlocked nature of the original hack. Another group is telling customers to wait--they say an "official" fix is on the way. Whether you have the patience to wait is up to you, but it's nice to know that you can nickname your iPhone Lazarus with the latest hack.

For more on the un-bricking technique:
- read the whole story at NetworkWorld

Update leads to 'iBricks'

You can't say that they didn't warn us. Apple said that unlocking hacks were likely to cause iPhones to stop working when system software updates were issued. Last week, an update was issued and, well, unlocked iPhones turned into "iBricks," useful only as very sleek paperweights. Owners were upset, hackers are (undoubtedly) very busy, and the rest of us will stay tuned for further developments.

For more on the iPhone software update:
- read the full story at DailyTechRag

It's shocking to consider, but not everyone loves the iPhone. Some corporations have even gone so far as to completely ban the Apple smartphone from the enterprise network. Now, though, a growing number of companies are implementing IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) email servers so that users with iPhones can access corporate email. IMAP may be the first step the iPhone takes through the corporate door but it's not likely to be the last: iPhone proponents look forward to the day when they'll be able to carry just the sleek new phone, and leave the BlackBerry at home.

Getting inside the iPhone

Ah, curiosity. It drove thousands of people to buy an Apple iPhone. It also drove a handful to take their iPhones apart to find out what makes them tick, or beep, or play videos. What did they discover? A processor and memory from Samsung, a wireless chip from Marvell, and a case that comes apart far more easily than it goes back together. What can you learn from their exploration? Some companies are learning how much the components cost, exactly what goes into the device, and (just maybe) how to make a phone that's as close to an iPhone as laws and regulations will allow.

For more on the iPhone's insides:
- read the hands-on article at eWeek
