How to deploy a wireless network smoothly

To hear tech leaders tell it, there are still some huge stumbling blocks in the way of a smooth wireless network deployment. One big issue is the lack of good management tools for keeping track of what's going on inside and outside of the enterprise. The second and third key hurdles are the need for better technology standards and easier to use devices. That's just a sampling of the insight gleaned from IT leaders attending the recent Interop conference. Better network performance tracking technology would be a big help, as would proactive monitoring capabilities. Yet, as some tech leaders relate, there have been more than a few success stories in deploying wireless networks and converging them with other voice and data networks already in place. Find out why these successes worked and what to be prepared for before you move ahead to give your users the wireless capabilities they need today. Article

PLUS: Dual-mode devices get closer to reality. Article

Device offers more than a cell, less than a BlackBerry

With the plethora of wireless devices available to use, it can get a bit crazy trying to figure out which one fills your users' needs. As the BlackBerry has gained a strong foothold in the user space, providing access to everything mobile, it could prove to be too feature-heavy for some mobile environments--and that's exactly the marketshare that Palm is heading for with its new Palm TX device. As one reviewer describes it, the device fits squarely between what a cell phone can provide and what the BlackBerry provides, and it fits the role well. Its hefty Web and wireless capabilities and pleasing graphic user interface could prove to be exactly what your road warriors need and want these days. And its price isn't too shabby, either. Article

Laptops that take wireless to the max

Dell is the latest vendor to grab bleeding-edge wireless technologies and integrate them into its laptop product line. The Latitude D620 and D820 both now feature optional built-in connectivity to wireless broadband technology. It will allow enterprises to choose services among cellular carriers, including Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless in the U.S. and Vodafone in Europe. While 3G high-speed network connectivity is still pretty limited and often not available in many cities, the laptops do support Verizon's Evolution Data Only and Cingular's High Speed Downlink Packet Access data transmission specs. The price point for the new device and wireless capabilities isn't too bad, averaging about $200 plus the service plan cost. In addition, the devices boast built-in 802.11b/g WiFi and a function called the Wi-Fi Catcher, which helps users detect WiFi hotspots without booting up the machine. Article

How AT&T saved big with wireless technology

One of the best ways to learn about new technology implementations is getting the scoop on how another enterprise did it, what they learned and what they hurdled over to make it a reality. It's no different with wireless deployments. Find out how AT&T Information Technology Services, an internal business support team, helped the company cut enterprise mobility costs when it came to wireless capabilities. White Paper
