First Look: iPhone firmware v2.0

While the enterprise-enabled version 2.0 iPhone firmware isn't scheduled to arrive until June, Apple is letting a select few folks nab a sneak peek at the in-development OS. Here's a few highlights from Engadget's recent hands-on:

"Exchange is so on! Changes are pushed over the network, but over WiFi it does check-ins, so it's not as instantaneous."

"Well, the branded Cisco VPN screen has definitely been added to the VPN settings. We couldn't really test this one, but assume it works as advertised. We don't yet know if it supports SecurID or other hardware token authenticators."

"By far our favorite new feature is multi-select in mail, though. Now when you hit edit you can select as many messages as you want and delete or move them as a group."

For more on the forthcoming firmware update:
- see this Engadget article

Google proposes new spectrum plans

New wireless service providers would have an easier time finding pieces of the spectrum if a proposal by Google reaches fruition. The Google proposal, detailed in an FCC filing last week, would open a secondary auction for spectrum in a model similar to the Google AdWords mechanism. In the Google proposal, a large wireless company winning an FCC auction for spectrum would be able to offer pieces of its allotment to smaller companies to provide new or restricted services. If accepted, the proposal might allow for smaller, more innovative firms to bring new services to market faster than if they had to win the FCC auction.

For more on the Google proposal:
- read the report from NetworkWorld

New AeroScout for auto-find

AeroScout's new T3 RFID tag, which communicates over WiFi networks and features simple response buttons for answering calls, will be on the market in the middle of 2007. These tags, examples of a new generation of enhanced RFID systems, are designed to allow for patient, physical asset, or employee tracking throughout a facility, with the buttons providing programmed responses when the status of the tagged asset changes. The tags, smaller and thinner than the current series, will communicate using Cisco Compatible Extensions in a standard WiFi network.

Remote workers still imperil enterprise security

A survey sponsored by Cisco and conducted by InsightExpress has found that poor judgment and bad practices by users are defeating the intent of security hardware and software, leaving enterprise systems and data at risk when remote devices are used to access corporate data. According to the study, sophisticated hacking tools aren't required to gain illicit access to data when users are willing to attach to unknown access points and ignore security warnings when establishing network connections.
