T-Mobile launches 3G network

As expected, T-Mobile USA's 3G network has finally gone live in New York City. Despite the rumors, the 3G service does include data in addition to voice, though it looks like it's only UMTS at the moment--HSDPA and "compelling data-centric, all-in-one devices" are promised "[i]n the coming months."Currently, the 3G service is only available in New York City, though "T-Mobile expects its high-speed data network will be available in those cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services" by the end of the year.

For more on the rollout:
- see this FierceWireless article
- and this Q&A with T-Mobile's Neville Ray

Verizon 4G network coming

Cellular-phone carrier Verizon has announced that it is building its next-generation network based on LTE (Long-Term Evolution) technology, making it the latest carrier to move toward genuine high-speed (100 Mbps) mobile network technology and leaving Sprint and Alltel as the only significant carriers in the U.S. sticking with CDMA as their network technology. The move should mean more non-phone devices with cellular network capabilities built in and an easier path for Verizon customers who want to go global roaming with the new phones.

For more on the new Verizon network technology:
- Read the hands-on heads-up at CIO-Today

Vendors collaborate on securing mobile devices

Adding those new mobile devices and providing greater wireless access to data is the easy part for tech organizations. The hard part comes in securing both access to the device and to networks and data. A collaborative effort by McAfee, maker of intrusion detection and security risk management software, and email services provider Good Technology could make the job a whole lot easier. The two vendors have partnered up to provide McAfee's virus scanning application to wireless phones via Good's services. That means IT managers can ensure that virus protection can be managed remotely without having the devices brought in for security checks. The vendors say it's all about treating mobile network access just like today's desktop landscape. Article

Pilot IP service holds promise for future enterprise capabilities

VeriSign's Wireless IP Connect Service, a new technology tying mobile and WiFi networks together that can also connect any device featuring an IP connection to a wireless carrier, is going into pilot efforts at three campuses this year. As the technology emulates a wireless switch, an IP network then turns to the mobile network like another switch, converting IP protocols into SS7. In porting the wireless phone number and support services to a PC, the technology can then turn a PC into the mobile device. The ability to enable data and VoIP between networks is a promising capability for today's organizations aiming to expand wireless networking functions.

For more on the new service:
- check out this article at InfoWorld
