T-Mobile launches 3G network

As expected, T-Mobile USA's 3G network has finally gone live in New York City. Despite the rumors, the 3G service does include data in addition to voice, though it looks like it's only UMTS at the moment--HSDPA and "compelling data-centric, all-in-one devices" are promised "[i]n the coming months."Currently, the 3G service is only available in New York City, though "T-Mobile expects its high-speed data network will be available in those cities where a majority of its subscribers currently use data services" by the end of the year.

Options are increasing for mobile users who don't want to depend on finding a WiFi hot spot to reach the Internet from the road. AT&T has announced a pair of HSDPA-capable cards, one for ExpressCard and the other for USB. Each is capable of high-speed wireless connectivity, and each will also work with an EDGE network if HSDPA isn't available. Need to head out of the U.S.? AT&T has roaming agreements in 125 countries where the Option GT Max 3.6 Express (ExpressCard) and Sierra Wireless AirCard 875U (USB) will work.

Nokia defends the high end

Consumers may be waiting for the iPhone, but handset vendors aren't. Nokia has released the N95, a $775 smart phone that runs the Symbian operating system and sports a wide variety of media applications. The N95, which Nokia describes as an "all-in-one media computer", is clearly aimed at customers whose interest in smart phones has been piqued by the iPhone--but who are ready for enhanced capabilities now. With a 5 megapixel camera, media support, a keyboard, and compatibility with 3G (HSDPA), WiFi and Bluetooth networking, the N95 brings a lot of capability for a lot of money. When considered alongside other recent Nokia announcements like the N800 tablet and E61 smart phone, the N95 is proof that Nokia has no plans to cede the high end of the market to Apple or anyone else.

The newest version of wideband CDMA is HSDPA, and it's likely going to be in the news quite a bit going forward with pilot tests by big players, like Nokia, taking place today. The beauty of HSDPA is that it promises greater data service in addition to stable voice capability. That's extremely enticing for enterprises as it will broaden coverage areas for broadband service and hopefully reduce costs for mobile workers. It's a ripe time to start developing mobile applications that take advantage of the alluring technology.
