Let the wireless price wars begin

Tools

Just a few short days ago, Verizon made a surprise announcement: the company was rolling out an unlimited calling plan for $99 a month. Mere hours later, two other top-tier carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile, followed suit. While AT&T's plan matches Verizon's, T-Mobile went one step further, throwing unlimited text and instant messaging into the mix for the same $99/month price point.

The only major carrier we've yet to hear from this week is Sprint. While the company already has a $119/month "Unlimited Access Pack" (unlimited voice, text, web, email and picture mail), they're widely expected to announce an unlimited voice plan that will either meet or undercut the other carrier's plans. According to some analysts, this plan could be offered for as little as $60/month, in an attempt to win back some of the subscribers that Sprint lost over the course of the last year. And if that happens, you can be sure that the other carriers will soon find themselves feeling the pressure.

Ultimately, these sorts of plans could really benefit businesses. Enterprises can now pay a flat fee for a user's line, without having to worry about that user going over his or her limit of allotted monthly minutes. This could really help enterprises with especially chatty users better manage their costs--something that even folks on the business side should be able to appreciate.

It is amazing what Sprints new WiMAX Network pricing plans and the recent 700Mhz Auction, requiring Open Access, has done to the creaky old CellCO networks around the world.
Competition certainly rules here today.
There will be a blood bath here as well as these big Carriers go at it and try to best each other in the next few months.
Also we need to keep an eye on the Price these big Carriers are bidding (will pay) for this new 700Mhz spectrum. It will have an impact on their bottom line as well as on the type of new Broadband Wireless services they decide to deploy to counter the emerging WiMAX Services that will be a true 4G service when combined with the 700Mhz Spectrum and possible 400Mhz White Space spectrums.
Of interest also is how far Sprint/Clearwire/Intel go with the 2.5Ghz based WiMAX products before they upgarde to the 700Mhz systems.
What is emerging now is a list of upstart Vendors (Telsima/Airspan/SONUS)developing a series of Radios (Base Station) to support the AWS SPectrum (1700Mhz and 2100Mhz), 700Mhz and the new White Space Spectrums (400Mhz+-)due out in 2009 timeframe. This will seriously impact the Broadband Data/Video delivery services of the big carriers.

As a Service provider this will be fun to watch.
